Dasavatharam And Moreeeee !!!

Kamal Haasan... Kamal Haasan... Kamal Haasan... sry... I cant type it 10 times...!!! The very feeling of typing a word 10 times makes me lazy.
But, just imagine, a man has done 10 roles in a single movie, with different make-up, body language and speech accent....!!!!
What more can i say, Kamal is just,

HARD WORK PERSONIFIED !!!

Dasavatharam--- Its Kamal haasan's show all through !!!! The movie is a show of grandeur. Kamal makes it beyond the ordinary. His sheer audacity, magnificence and histrionics are simply spellbinding. And creativity is given new dimensions.

The Storyline

The Story Line For Dasa is very Simple, its just a TWO LINER. People might say there's hardly any story in the movie. But i feel the screenplay is the story by itself (Kamal's 11th Avathar) has been done really intelligently.
In a movie having 10 roles, the only thing to think about or expect in a story is, " How exactly are all the 10 roles binded together to a single thing, well mostly co-incidentally binded". As a matter of fact even in real life, the meeting of TEN different varied people can be only co- incidental-- not a planned one. Well, this is what happens in the movie, which is supported by
CHAOS THEORY !!!

The film opens with a bird's eye view of Chennai were Kamal is giving a Speech, and takes the audience to the past -- the 12th century.
In Chidambaram, Vaishnavaites and Shaivaites are in perpetual conflict with the former taking the position that Lord Vishnu is supreme and the Shaivaites being steadfast in their faith in Shiva. King Kulothunga Chozhan (Napoleon), a Shaivaite, forces Nambi (Kamal), a staunch Vaishnavite, to worship Shiva. As Nambi rebels, the king sentences him to death. On the orders of the King, his soldiers throw Nambi into the oceans tied to a stone image of Lord Vishnu. Nambi's wife Kothai (Asin) also dies from shock.

From this 12th century episode, the story moves to the 21st century. Action begins in the United States where Govindaraj is part of a team of scientists working on a virus. If exposed to the elements it can spread rapidly and kill millions of people. Coming to know of it, baddies (again a team led by Kamal, this time as Christian Fletcher, a former CIA agent) try to acquire it to use it in a bio-war. By mistake, the virus comes in a parcel to India. Govindaraj and Fletcher come to India looking for the parcel which has reached Chidambaram. Suspecting that Govindaraj has taken away the deadly virus, US President Bush (he too is Kamal), asks the Indian Government to apprehend him.

In his journey to find the parcel containing the virus and destroy it, Govindaraj meets Andal (Asin) who is a staunch Vaishnavaite, Krishnaveni Paati, a 90-year-old woman; a tall and innocent Muslim youth, Kaifullah Khan; a Punjabi pop singer, Avatar Singh; a Dalit leader, Vincent Poovaragan; a Japanese martial arts teacher Shingen Narahashi; and an intelligence official (RAW) of the Government of India, Balaram Naidu (all Kamals). The virus eventually falls into the hands of Fletcher. Who swallows it and dies when the intelligence official corners him with a gun. Then tsunami strikes Chennai inundating a stretch of the seashore in Chennai. Poovaragan (Kamal) drowns in the sea while being engaged in rescue operations.

THE 10 Roles

Kamal shows his versatility in all the roles. Every frame is an experience in itself. Each of the characters played by Kamal has a different skin tone and a different make-up. The lingo also varies from character to character, making each role distinctly different.

Kamal as said earlier, has spun a "TWO LINER Story" thats has complex concepts (Chaos Theory/Butterfly effects etc.,) for the common man to comprehend in their own way. People who look it in a more intellectual view point will definitely appreciate his effort !!!

Kamal has really excelled in his eleventh role of the screenplay writer. It had so many "micro woven" intricacies implying various complex concepts webbed around to the movie, which i cant imagine any normal script writer to think of. Its such a fantastic subject that mixes intelligence with commercial ingredients. It requires an extraordinary intelligent mind to write the sequences some of which are food for thought to the intellectuals as well as ordinary people.

Action packed chases, entry of every new character of Kamal in regular intervals, and a racy scene every now and then made me feel the movie really entertaining. Beyond all .......the KAMAL FACTOR just made me awestruck, missing many dialogues gaping at KAMAL's acting !!

Guys who complain about the story, make-up and graphics are expecting tooooo much from an Indian(tamil) movie!! High expectations are natural because the actor is the GREAT Kamal Haasan. But if someone is expecting graphics to the standard of 'Lord of the Rings' in a tamil movie, then thats foolish. This movie has got visual effects which no other indian movie has produced! Its a pure visual treat! This movie has taken tamil/indian movies to the next level. And finally, the movie is made for TAMIL audience!

I read someone writing this movie might not run in B/C center. But, I personally felt it will be a huge success in B/C centers. Its guys like us who have watched all these hollywood movies complain about the graphics / story / screenplay. From a normal tamil film viewer point of view this is gonna be a sure visual treat.

The greatest thing about DASA is,

Case 1:
If u see it just as a just another movie, without pondering much about logic and storyline, looking for entertainment and gloss, you will love the movie as a COMMERCIAL RACY ENTERTAINER....!!!

Case 2:
ALSO if u see it in a more INTELLECTUAL ANGLE, U love it EVEN MORE appreciating
KAMAL's Brilliance ...!!!
Well, each movie has its commercial flaws, but there are a hundred things which you would appreciate in the movie and film making, that those minuscule flaws are clearly overshadowed.

Case 3:
If u r Midway, Thinking about logic, but not knowing much about CHAOS THEORY AND
BUTTERFLY EFFECT, then u might find the movie damp.
Being mid way is always a problem wherever. No one can be blamed for that !!!

You have to be one of the first two cases not the third one to really like the movie...!!!

6. Avatar Singh [ A Famous Pop Singer ]

- Kamal looks just like A Sikh... Wonderful.

Shingen Narahashi at Fletcher: "You wanna die slowly or quickly ?? "

Other Aspects

- Camerawork by Ravi Varman was too good to be ignored.
- Despite playing dual roles in the film, Asin hasn’t got much to do on her part, but her works are really outstanding and in particular her enunciating the Brahmin style is really mind blowing.

- Mallika Sherawat although not needed for the movie, was there in the movie just add a commercial gloss and for other very obvious reasons.

- Himesh Reshammiya fails except for "Kallai Mattum" and "Oh Oh Sanam"
- Background music by Devi Sri prasad is excellent.
- K.S. Ravi Kumar has a word of appreciation for Supporting Kamal, not Directing him.
- Wonderful Editing
- Full marks to the Make up Artist and his team and to Kamal for that.
- A Kamal special ! His usage of Unga Kadavul, unga perumal might not go well with the theists but I say Unga kamal dhaane..free aa Vidunga....... ;-).

People who complain about the story, make-up and graphics are expecting tooooo much from an Indian(tamil) movie!! High expectations are natural because the actor is the GREAT Kamal Hasan. But if someone is expecting graphics to the standard of 'Lord of the Rings' in a tamil movie, then thats foolish. This movie has got visual effects which no other indian movie has produced! Its a pure visual treat! This movie has taken tamil/indian movies to the next level.

More On Dasavatharam And ETC...!!!!!!

Too many doubts about correlation of the movie, Chaos theory and Butterfly Effect have come into Picture....!!!

Let me come 2 one aspect....

The movie clearly states about Chaos Theory and Butterfly Effect [Kamal says it in his Speech in the Movie ]

The concept of "CHAOS THEORY" and "BUTTERFLY EFFECT", by itself is a complex concept, which mainly highlights the happening of huge unimaginable things because of least probable things...!!!!

Dasa although deals with these concept, but does not necessarily confuse anyone with it,,,, As i said earlier, its mainly "YOU"... that plays a factor in how the movie gets along with "YOU".

You have got to be Case 1 or Case 2 as i have said earlier in this entry,,, No use being Half Baked.....!!!!

To just brief about these Concepts,

Q: What is a Chaotic System ?
A: Basically a chaotic system is one wherein long term predictions are impossible.Like for example,if I push a car, I know that it is going to move and it will continue to do so if I go on pushing it on and on.However,in a chaotic system, this situation cannot be predicted over a long period of time.
Weather for example is a chaotic system. No matter how good your instruments are,you simply cannot predict the weather with 100% accuracy over a long term basis and forecast it.

Q: What is the Butterfly Effect ?
A: It is the most important component of a chaotic system.Basically, small perturbations results in amplifications which completely destroys the original nature of the system and makes prediction impossible.
If a butterfly flaps its wings in Africa,it could result in a cyclone in USA.(Mark the word COULD).A highly dumbed down explanation of the butterfly effect is in the film Anniyan, where Vikram's sister dies because a liquor shop owner sells liquor on a dry day.

Q: OK, how does Dasa incorporate it ?
A: In essence,Dasa talks about 8 characters who are inconsequential as such, but are integrated in a larger picture.Without Bush, the plane would have been called back.Without Shinghen, Govind would be dead.Without the tsunami, the world would have been destroyed.Even Krishnaveni Patti plays a very important role.If she had not put the vial in the idol, maybe Govind would have recovered it then and there and a powerful weapon would have been unleashed. The very fact that it went into the idol meant that it was being accelerated to its destiny.Without Kaifulla Khan, Govind would have never escaped;the list simply goes on.

Q:OK,so does the film talk about theism or atheism?
A:Neither. It talks about how humans drive the destiny of the world.

MOREEEEEEEE....!!!!!!!!!!

CHAOS THEORY

In mathematics, chaos theory describes the behavior of certain dynamical systems – that is, systems whose state evolves with time – that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initial conditions (popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponential growth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior of chaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully defined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos.

Chaotic behaviour is also observed in natural systems, such as the weather. This may be explained by a chaos-theoretical analysis of a mathematical model of such a system, embodying the laws of physics that are relevant for the natural system.

BUTTERFLY EFFECT

The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different. Of course the butterfly cannot literally cause a tornado. The kinetic energy in a tornado is enormously larger than the energy in the turbulence of a butterfly. The kinetic energy
of a tornado is ultimately provided by the sun and the butterfly can only influence certain details of weather events in a chaotic manner.

Recurrence, the approximate return of a system towards its initial conditions, together with sensitive dependence on initial conditions are the two main ingredients for chaotic motion. They have the practical consequence of making complex systems, such as the weather, difficult to predict past a certain time range (approximately a week in the case of weather).
The movie does Show " A Butterfly " flying accross the screen after the Tsunami Attcck, clearly indicating that the Tsunami is an Outcome of " The Butterfly effect ".

ALSOOOOOOO........

I said that the butterfly COULD cause a hurricane. That's a huge probability. Would be a negligible probability. NOT a huge one. if that were true, we would have cyclones on an hourly basis as butterflies keep flitting all over Africa and u don't have so many cyclones to account for a HUGE probability.
Chaos, relativity and quantum mechanics are so damn weird that you will think I am talking metaphysics and pseudoscience.

Like for example, according to quantum mechanics, there is a finite probability that you will fall right through a solid chair. And it is a PROBABILITY.
Even 10 to the power -26 is finite :-) .

But yes, Quantum Mechanics does allow for weird situations.

THE CONNECTION !!!!!

Guys check this link for a clear and complete explanation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_effect

In the above links u can see that butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location..

So in dasavatharam that idol thrown into sea in 12th century is the cause for tsunami.... so everything is interlinked .The wiki entry also says that chaos could play an important role in plate techtonics. Which means even the 12th century incident is connected.

The 1st scene is perfectly connected to the climax, remember what Kamal says in the 1st scene, that he will not say "Om Nama Shivaya" , but Asin tells him to chant it , but still Kamal refuses , ( in this kamal in his story tries to tell that ) Nambi believes in his god more than anything, but Asin feels "Its ok if we change the god or chant other god's name, its life thats most important." Now if u see the climax its JUST OPPOSITE.... Kamal doesn't believe in god much and values lives of people the most.... but Asin deeply believes in god and that too this dialogue comes when both Asin and Kamal's hand is on the god which came from the sea , and it also means that they are getting united from the place they departed hundreds of years back ( Kamal and Asin). The connection between the 1st scene and the climax in the movie shows the generation circle combined with supernatural powers of GOD and destiny.....!!!

If you watch it closely u can also find another actor who has done double action other than Asin and Kamal.
Asin's father Sahasranamam [12th Century], in the beginning he says to Nambi "Panchatchira manthirathai sollitu vaango mappillai" and at the End [After tsunami] he says "Avar enna jathiyo inga vaanga paati ".
Another Eg. of Chaos Theory and circle of life.

JUST IMAGINE THE CHAOS THEORY IN A TAMIL FILM ??
WILL ANYONE HAVE THE GUTS TO HANDLE THIS KIND OF A SUBJECT IN A TAMIL FILM?

ONLY KAMAL HAS THE GUTS.... U ROCK!!

FURTHER-------------

Nambi explanation

Okay, this is slightly outside the chaotic system driving the film as a whole. From what I could gather he says that this story is about ideologies like God,the madness surrounding such ideologies and decides to tell the story of the Shaivite-Vaishnavite conflict to show how people go crazy in the name of God as an example.

As a loose end,it gets tied up in the end, when the Ranganathar idol is thrown out of the sea due to the tsunami which highlights the cyclic nature of life.Actually the Nambi character highlights both Chaos and Karma which I explained. That is the brilliance of this film, there is so much to see and understand.

Another explanation(and this is slightly far fetched--- as explained earlier) is that Govind is in fact the reincaranation of Nambi. As Nambi he couldn't protect God and died in the name of God.In order to fulfill his Karma,he is reincarnated as Govind Ramasamy who ultimately saves the world from destruction. The idol in the end somewhat hints to this theory; his story began with the idol and it ends with the idol.
As far as the connection with Nambi character and events in 12th Century goes...
The connection is based on the "Butterfly effect ".

When Govind and Andal goes to the bury the idol in the sands, Andal will stumble on a particular stone couple of times...This is the same stone as the one from 12th Century hen Kothai rips her Thaali and flings it at Kulothunga Chozan...it will end up hanging on the stone. So, the implied message here is Andal is Kothai reborn in the 21s century.
During the encounter with Santhana Bharathi in the sand quarry, it is repeat of the incident from 12th century. Instead of Kulothunga Chozhan, it is the Sand Mafia which tries to inflict damage on the land.
This movie is a brilliant juxtaposition of independent characters whose paths cross, if only briefly, which is stunning example of Chaos Theory.

The idol that is drowned in the sea along with Rangarajan in 12th century by Chozha king results in a fault being developed at the bottom of the ocean and creates tremors more than 800 years later. These tremors result in the Tsunami. This again is a classic case of Butterfly Effect wherein a seemingly inconcsequential event (the drowing of the idol) saves Tamil Nadu from being wiped out off the face of the earth.

But actually kamal has not left anything for our imagination... Explanation struck the right chord, Kamal does tell to Asin in a dialogue that idol which gets sunken back then gets struck between the tectonic plates under the sea and causes tsunami...
Many people missed this dialogue i guess. Kamal's accent was so very perfect Tamil, that many people missed it.... Being perfect Is a Problem by Itself !!! :)

Although the explanation is a least possible theory, that is what "Chaos Theory" And "Butterfly Effect" are all about.
Its not just the statue that caused the tsunami, but it just started a large chain of effects which kept multiplying exponentially and finally lead to it after 800 years....!!
Why just say this concept is perfectly illogical... it is possible... thats what i have been explaining all the while !!!

The story line is that things going wrong are made to be right which involves many people and countries knowingly or unknowingly.

Knowingly:

-Bush, Manmohan Singh, Govindh, Fletcher, Balaram Naidu, Mallika Sherawath.

Unknowingly:

-Nambi's drowning to death with the heavy statue causes simple changes to the seabed that causes a devastating tsunami 800 years later [Acc. to Chaos theory it is possible.... although it is least probable... It is possible.. so nothing TOTALLY WRONG About it ]
-Poovaragan(actually saved kamal unknowingly---when poovaragan enters kamal and asin were caught by those manal kollayargal. There poovaragan distracts the gang helping kamal to escape),
- Avatar Singh(gave way to Fletcher to escape in the airport unknowingly),
- Japanese(saved govind from fletcher,he knows he is saving but he doesnt know about the play and was there only for revenge),
- Kallifulla and family(saved govind unknowingly)........
-Vincent is a dalit leader of a lower caste( the so called ) but saved an Iyengar Girl ......and at the end becomes the con of the Iyengar Paati !!
- If Shingen Narahashi's sister was not killed, Fletcher could have killed govind and used the virus for wrong purpose..

This is based on Chaos Theory..!!!!!

It is marvellous that Aandavar Kamal has used such a device in Abhoorva Saghodhararghal, way back in 1989. To kill Delhi Ganesh, for those of you who do not remember... yet another Eg. of Chaos Theory And butterfly Effect !

The plot concept of Dasavadhaaram is logically explained by a machine used by Him in His own screenplay back then too, before 20 Years!! Be it a coincidence, or He possibly had that in mind as an inspiration, it amazes me!!

My whole point is, Kamal Haasan, is a Born Genius !!! I am just trying to ADMIRE Him.....!!!!!!

This Blog entry is purely my personal opinion... If observe many other things when i watch it again, i will surely EDIT the entry and POST them.
Thanks to all my fellow Kamal Fans, for explaining to me many things, without which this blog entry would have been impossible.

I am not answerable to your doubts on the movie... Neither am i convincing anyone who doesn't like the movie. its all in your EYES.
As a matter of fact--- Liking Movies is Very Much Individual oriented and can never be inflicted.
I have just put forward my views on the movie.... and ... What DASA Meant to ME !!!!

Tats It !!!!!!!!!!

A Fan's Quote (which i read somewhere) : " I'm not an atheist like Kamal because my God is Kamal ...!!! "

Contributions by Readers...!!!

Many wanted me to post this explanation also.... Good Contribution...!!!

The Ten Roles And Vishnu's Dasavathars !

One thing we had noticed is why people didn’t get the real subtext and reason for the various roles and hence the title.
If you knew the real dasavatharams of Lord Vishnu and their characters you can appreciate the script more.
Let me explain, starting with the best adapted role:

1. Krishna Avatar - Vincent Poovaraghavan

Lord Krishna is actually dark-skinned [shyamalam]. He saved Draupadi when she was being violated and he was the actual diplomat in Mahabharath. Lord Krishna dies of an arrow striking his lower leg. Vincent Poovaraghavan- the Dalit Leader is also Dark Skinned. Also look at how Vincent was introduced.. He appears when Asin is about to be molested and he saves her like Draupadi. Vincent is the dalit diplomat, fights for land issue [soil issue to be exact] and dies from the metal rod striking his leg. Also..Even though Vincent Poovaraghan is a Christian Character, the name Poovaraghan is one of the names of Lord Krishna.

2. Balarama Avatar - Balaram Naidu

This is an easy given. as the name suggests and the role personifies you can easily get it.

3. Mathsya Avatar - Rangaraja Nambi

Nambi is thrown into water in an act of trying to save lord from being thrown into sea, though vainly. what more clue do you want?

4. Varaha Avatar - Krishnaveni Paatti

During the Mukunda song, Krishnaveni paatti does varaha avatar in the shadow puppetry without using much items. The frame freezes on it for a second. There is the clue.

5. Vamana Avatar - Kalifulla khan

Remember in Vamana avatar, Lord Vishnu takes the vishvaroopa, that is the giant form! Hence the giant Kalifulla here symbolises Vamana avatar.

6. Parasurama Avatar - Christian Fletcher

Parasurama is actually on an angry killing spree and killed 21 generations of the particular kshatriya vamsa. Hence the real KILLER… Guess what thats what our Fletcher is! He comes around with the gun [modern upgrade for axe] and kills everyone around. I have to check if he kills 21 people though.

7. Narasimha Avatar - Shingen Narahashi

First of all the name itself is a play on the words singam [means lion in tamil] and narasimha [the avatar being symbolised]. Lord Narasimha manifests himelf to kill the bad guy and he also teaches Prahaladha. In the movie, he shows up to kill the killer Fletcher! and is also a teacher.. Lord Narasimha had to kill the asura with bare hands and hence the martial arts exponent here.. Get it??

8. Rama Avatar - Avatar Singh

Lord Rama stands for the one man one woman maxim, kind of symbolising true love.. Here Avatar portrays that spirit by saying that he loves his woman more than anything and wants to live for her.

9. Kalki Avatar - Govindaraj Ramasamy

As you know, the hero in Kaliyug can be none other than the Kalki avatar!!!

10. Koorma Avatar - Bush

This is the most loose adaptation I couldn’t clearly comprehend. But if you look at the real Koorma avatar, the lord is the turtle/tortoise that helps in stirring the Ksheera Sagara and bringing out the amruth. This essentially creates war among the devas and asuras. Similarly today Bush facilitates war between you know whom… May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise…

This is just a bad attempt to provide the reason for the Title…;P

Link Between 12th Century story and its reason in the movie...!!!

If u had noticed in the opening scene...
Kamal tells "Thillai'il natarajar um vishnu vum ondi kuduthanam nadathina kalam"

Thillai is another name for chidambaram... so this means tht the evnts of the 12th century were also in the town of chidambaram.
Now.... In every temple there is a main idol for worship and a smaller one for procession
The Bigger one is called Moolavar. Smaller one is called Utsavar which is used for processions.

If u noticed King Kulothunga Chozhan (Napoleon) asks Nambi were is Rangarajar (who has the smaller idol).. Meaning he was asking him where the smaller idol is...having removed the bigger one... Nambi replies him saying tat he would not tell the location, even if by chance he knew it... The King also challenges that he will easily find the smaller idol and destroy that also... but actually he never found it....

Now tht smaller idol is the one which comes throughout the movie....!!!

This is another example of the Chaos Theory... If
King Kulothunga had found the idol then the idol wouldnt have come in the movie and the patti wouldnt have put the vial into it...!!!

Napolean mentions "Ramanujar". Ramanujar was profoundly involved in spreading Vaishnavism coz of which he hided himself in Karnataka for safety.

Well written review!

btw urs and mine match in this point:

"People who complain about the story, make-up and graphics are expecting tooooo much from an Indian(tamil) movie!! High expectations are natural because the actor is the GREAT Kamal Hasan. But if someone is expecting graphics to the standard of 'Lord of the Rings' in a tamil movie, then thats foolish. This movie has got visual effects which no other indian movie has produced! Its a pure visual treat! This movie has taken tamil/indian movies to the next level."

Hey Dude....ur comment was very good and gave more insights into the movie as such....

I agree the movie had a tiny storyline built with a wonderful screenplay and well knit net with all the characters linked properly....all people were with a reason....except for the charcters of Vaiyapuri and Chiti Babu....

But whatever u say...however u justify the make-up and Graphics....Its true that it was sub0-standard....all expected much from Kamal in Make-up and Graphics...Some examples

1. In the 12th century episode, when Kamal and statue are taken in a boat in the river....The graphics looked worse than a Flash movie.

2. The scene when Fletcher and Mallika go in a jeep, the graphics was very bad....same was the train sequence involving Kamal and Asin....that looked very unnatural...

3. The Tsunami starting was good...but in some places the Giant waves looked very bad.

4. In the Tsunami scene, after Poovaragan is dead....the car sinks into water....that scene was very very bad.

5. Worst one which I felt was the waves covering Thiruvalluvar statue.....that was bad and totally unneeded.

Regarding make-up, Avtar Singh, Poovaragan and Balram Naidu were very good....

Bush and Chinese was good enuf....

Fletcher was good at times and not so good other times....Kalifulla, and Paatti were not so impressive for me....

If u see India and Avvai Shanmughi were released 12 years back....and the make-up was so real and impressive....So now in 2008 I expected much much more.....

But Kamal is Kamal.....he did a gr8 job in the movie....his accent, bodylanguage and actimg prowess was unbeatble.....

hey dude.. ur explanations was awesome.. but i will tel u one more angle which v can relate to the 12th and the 21st century...

1. the 12th century temple gets destroyed in time(this s assumed and i will give valid comments to this assumption).. and before the interval the idol falls and get struck in d sand... this place is where the 12th century temple was there.. u can also conclude this from d movie itself, when kamal calls her to get ice she slips her legs in one stone in tat place and when they show d close up the stone is nothing but a Shiva idol.. so v can conclude this s where the temple was in 12th century.. and cause of the destruction of the temple.. sands get accumulated.. and in 21st century people stars smuggling sand.. due to excessive smuggling of sand it cause earth plates to shift which causes tsunami.,. and d poovaragan character stresses not to smuggle sand and he fights with d villain against d smuggling of sand.. even this way v can think.. and the god instead of destroying d entire world saves d world by causing tsunami thereby destroying only a part of world..and the idol which comes to shore in the last scene represents this one..

I don't agree that the make-up is good. Some characters look alike in make-up. Also, I want to point out that if one can't identify Kamal in the make-up then the character could have been played by anyone. Atleast five characters were redundant. One wonders with all kamal's talent he could have as well played Asin, Mallika roles and made it to a better record of 12 roles. It is difficult to find a link between the 12th century story and the main story. Events shown in U.S have been rushed through. Asin's nagging away at kamal about the statue was exasperating. It is not clear the bio-weapon was destroyed by tsunami or Fletcher swallowing it and again one wonders why Fletcher should swallow it after chasing it all over the globe. One another disappointment is that there is no anjali to writer Sujatha. Music is mediocre and background music is passable. In the final analysis it is only an exercise in vanity of seeing kamal in ten roles.

Dude ,

First of all let me say from my heart . I am one among the hard core Kamal's fan who got teribbly dissapointed after watching the movie .

I saw the movie in a rural area (Aranthangi -Subha Theater) with a crowd of farmers ,daily wagers and shop keepers of Tamilnadu .

There are always two energy positive and negative . You have hyped the positive side but not the negative side which is dominating the positive energy .....

As you have mentioned
" This movie has taken tamil/indian movies to the next level. And finally, the movie is made for TAMIL audience"

If this movie would have travelled with Christian Fletcher and Govindaraj . It would have been a super duper hit for sure ...

..Other roles are just fitted to make it XL which is not at all needed for a L size movie targeted for Tamil audiance .

You guys talk about screen play
....DO u think a normal human can understand it ....I think we should do Phd for watching Kamal movies .........Does this movie require Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha ???? if the scene has to show some reality then his choices for choosing them are worthy .....

A better screenplay should make even a lay man to understand ....I cannot be a Nostradamous who has done Phd to watch Kaml movies ...Being very much disspointed i would say Kaml can leave his Ego and choose better movies ...

Its high time both Rajini coming out of larger than life character and Kaml coming out of Larger than life stories .....I hope Kamal will take it as a lesson .......

Complex theory was put down well. I dont know how many others could explain atleast to this extent.

Nice post dude... few more observations...

- Every scene scientist kamal goes thr wud be either rama, krishna or Namal symbol

- In naidu kamal intro he ask t security person for his name and place... he wud say srinivasu lu from Srikakulam... srikakulam s only place in wrld to ve a temple for Kurma avatar

- In comedy sequence he wud ask for young mans name in Alpha Courier his name wud be Narasima Roa - NARASIMA AVATAR

- Muslim kamals name is Kalifula Khan - KALI - Kali yugam

- Flecther wud try to recollect t cities name--- he wud say Trivandrum - varaha avatar temple

Ananth said...

Other things wud be the time frame of t whole movie... t dates and times shown in movie s Indian dates and time.... even scenes in US are Indian times... Movie start on 20 dec 2004 its a Monday .. but wen kamsl goes to MASkargo to stop the package he wud say thr s a bomb in t parcel... t reply frm the employee wud be "Hey dont ruin my weekend"... cos 20th in India s 19th in US. and kamal start from US on 19th(US) and reach india on 21st (India) MORNING... and its not start on 20th night and arrival on 21st morning....

Unknown said...

@ Anand
The Courier man says "dont ruin my weekend"
its because the week of Dec 25th (Christmas) will be holiday for all. never mind if its weekday or weekend.. its vacation time dude..
And i personally know americans calling vacation as weekend.. so. it makes sence..

About the indian dates...
Govind got into the cargo on a night..
Fletcher met mallika that night. married her the second day.. and the second day night is the third day morning in india and that is when Govind reaches india.. got it???

Awesome work. Felt a lot of the same things when watching the movie, but needs somebody with the clarity of thought to put it all together in a blog. Good work and thanks for the review. I ve watched my share of natural disaster movies (Dante's Peak, Twister etc) and this is one of the best movies to create a complete back story to a natural disaster without making you think about the natural disaster itself too much. Anyways, thanks again for the review...

This blog is truly a microcosm of the efforts kamal hasan has taken to act such a demanding film. If a film can inspire a reluctant writer to take so much pains to write an almost epic blog on an epic story, then its surely worth watching and pondering over. The fact that an actor can bring out so much hidden talent in a fan of his is surely a greater tribute to his acting than all the national awards put together. I think kamal hasan must be thankful for having fans like vasanth. They are the ones who keep him going. Instead of bursting crackers, blocking the traffic on the road, shouting slogans and painting their faces in various colours, fans like vasanth channel their admiration into writing wonderful blogs! Isn't that quite exceptional? Has any rajini film inspired any of his fans to write blogs? I very much doubt it.(sure, some of his fans have been inspired to smoke a cigarette)I must admit that my first feeling after reading the blog was one of shame. Why? Because i had seen the movie in the most superficial way. I felt the story was quite weak and probably that prevented me from adequately appreciating the subtler nuances in the film. But it was only after i read this blog that i realized how much i had missed. I was never intelligent enough to see the relation between the movie and Lord Vishnu's avatars. But vasanth has brought it out so nicely. Remember that both of us have seen the movie only once. But look at the depth of vasanth's understanding and appreciation of the film's finer details! It simply made me both speechless and ashamed. Speechless because i never knew vasanth had such a flair for writing. Ashamed because i had been blind to notice the intricacies of the film. Even if a person is not an ardent fan of kamals or didnt like the film , he/she will surely enjoy reading this blog and may change his/her opinion regarding the film after reading it.This surely is a great tribute to a budding writer like vasanth. It is even a greater tribute to the great actor who inspired him to write this blog.

Great Post Dude.. Also.. Another eg. of Kamal's Hardwork and Dedication..!!

In Dasavatharam Kamal wears so many contact lenses. As a contact lens specialist I could know his pain. In Anbesivam, he wearing -10 sph contact lens & then +10 sph spectacle. In dis film he wearing for Krishnaveni patti centre pupil opaque lens in Right eye & total corneal opacity lens n Left eye,b'coz in Thermal countries like India, 99.99 % rural people have the arcus senile with corneal opacity & cataract. Thatswhy he shows, krishnaveni patti have cataract n right& total corneal opacity in left. I surely say, after wearing d lens he hadn't any vision in left& only get 60% vision in right. That means he had not the binacular vision at the time f acting, simply say one eyed vision. Please imagine, can u act just 15 mnts closing d one eye? U ll miss d 3D vision. It's very hard. But Kamal did that. That's d real dedication for art.
Thatswhy he became a ULAGA NAYAGAN!!! " SODHANAI UNNAI SOOZNDHU NINDRALUM SODHANAI MUYARCHI SORVURAVILLAI"....

Dude, You have given a great insight to the movie, but accept a fact that it is only intellects who could appreciate Kamal's Magnificence, I come across many people; who just watch movie for fun and they will never be interested in getting so deep into a movie like what u did,

Thats where Kamal loses his identity, this movie is too much for a Tamil Tom, Dick & Harry,
Take Kamal to the next level of world cinema, try not to prove Kamal's worth to certain dimwits who will never ever will understand Kamal's Greatness,

I wanted to say that "People talk about the poor graphics what was done in the tsunami sequence and opening sequence, why don't they appreciate the presence of multi-characters sharing screen at a time"

Is it not a wonder ?
Bringing all those characters grouped in a single scene,

Keep on your Good Work, post only for fans of Kamal

In the introduction, first kamal says "Vishnum Shivanum vilayada vera kdadavul illatha karanathal, tham pagthargalukul mothi vilayandu konda kalam" he says. Nice to hear!!! I read in a news article that Great Kamal have taken steps to show the movie to Mr.Bush. What did he say? Any idea....? And one more thing to add Scientist Kamal: "Ayyo! Nann ungala vida high rank..uyar athikariya santhikanum,Tamil aarvamum irukanum, athey nerathula vignanamum therinjirikanum" Balram Naidu Kamal replies "Appo Mr.Abdul Kalamku phone pottu kudukattuma?", practially a real answer to the question

Every movie has got its own + and -. But the effort is what matters whether Butterfly effect or Chaos Theory all needs to be understood and story should be spun to give a movie with all the ingredients for success and set the cash register ringing.

Hi Guys,

I have not read the previous comments, but on my part i need to include few words here...

We can imagine the feel (raise) of Tsunami by the Tiruvalluvar idol in the movie. Tsunami water rises to the chest level of Tiruvalluvar idol which is supposed to be 133 feet (correct me if i am wrong)...So if water rises till the chest height of the idol imagine the terror it would have created... Some of the typical iyengar aged women's style is really superb ( Madi, aacharam) very orthodox brahmin old lady...In one place she used to correct her saree also above her head... Amazing... There's no gain without pain..... If Oscar was not given to Kamal Hassan for this movie, i think that award doesnot be deserved to given to such a talented person... He deserves more than that... One more if you have seen this movie in a really good sound theatre ( Thanks to PVR, Blore), while at the end of the movie, you can hear the terror caused by tsunami... My friend was looking on his left thinking some one is really crying.... So here the movie stand taller than the tiruvallur idol..... Keep it up kamal.... Kamal you have done kammmaaaaallllll :)

Hi Vasanth,
Nice one.. I have forwarded this link to many of my friends so that everyone appreciates the movie's subtle messages and the hard work that has gone in to the making of the movie..
Btw, when going through the box office performance of Dasavatharam as per http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/weekend/?yr=2008&wk=25&p=.htm

Dasavatharam has already crossed $11.6 Million in its 2nd week and when I tried comparing this with Sivaji

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/weekend/?yr=2007&wk=28p=.htm

it garnered only $ 3 Million in its 5th week (Gross revenue)... Have you done some research around this also.... Sivaji's revenue seems to be so low when compared to our thalaivar's movie... But it is extremely low and so wanted to bring this up in this forum to confirm this..

Thanks

Just noticed one thing while reading the review. Out of the many seemingly opposite connections between the 12th and the 21st century, even the century numbers seem to be opposite (12 is the opposite of 21 or vice versa). A coincidence or a genius subtlety of Kamal's pen?

Well Said !!! Nice Comments...

I just have a different opinion on the makups and graphics... If you have a close look at "What is actually required for the movie ?" if Kamal wanted to do 10 Roles... is a clean makup make and it look like a normal human rather than looking like an animated charactor.

We have seen Kamal's differnt kind of body languages, accents, roles etc., right from Punnagai Mannan, Aboorva Sagotharargal, Singaravelan, Thevar Magan, Kuruthi Punal, to Hey Ram, Aalavanthaan and Vettaiyaadi Vilaiyaadu... (sorry for this short-listed list, the actuall list more)

What i really feel is he should have had the Make-Up as the top priority than showing up that different body language... u dont need to quantify the difference in body language (Konjam appidi ippidi irunthaalum adjust pannalaam) but the make-up was pathetic.. it was that pathetic that It didnt really make to watch for the second time.. :-(

Actually this is a small minus to the film but has a big impact...

-I am sorry if i have hurt anyone or said something wrong...

Hats off to Kamal and Team for this Valiant effort... We'll expect something more from his next venture Marmayogi...

Dear VASANTH,

When I first watched this film, I did not like it much except of course for Balaram Naidu and Vincent Poovaraghan. The initial speech speaking of God in such a disparaging tone and the 12th Century scene where he is unclear whether he is an advithist or a vaishnvaite annoyed me. Philosophically he was contradicting himself. The American part was boring but the movie got better after he comes back to India.Forget all that.

Reading your blog shook something in me. Reminded me of something which had died in me once I left college. Seeing a Kamal movie with the premise that what Kamal is doing is definitely right. We just had to understand how. I remember defending Aalavandhan with all kinds of incisive arguments though that movie too I found as crap. It was more like how can I let my Kamal down. Your blog reminded me of those days. phew...

Anyway I had to and did see the movie again after reading your blog. I still found that your arguments where ill founded since (a) Kamal tells asin that the tectonic plates where misaligned many lakhs of years ago and not in the 12th Century and (b) even if it was because of that reason, how would Govind know it. Kamal might be God but the role he portrays was merely one of a scientist. Since he does not know it, it makes no sense for him to talk about it to a mass gathering which was assembled for honouring a man who saved them from a biochemical disaster.

Sorry to play spoil sport regarding the logic but that is not the point. The point is that you are obsessed and passionate about anything that Kamal does and that is what floored me and made me forward your blog to all I knew.

Regards,

Harish

hi guys,

This shows Kamal's Hardwork. No one can beat him. He only the man break his record. The 10 Avathar's seems like that re-birth of Vishnu Avathars (Macham,Koorma....). Hats off Kamal!!!!!

Great review Vinod.
I have seen the movie twice to understand its complexities and nuisances. Spectacular movie of Indian Cinema. Hope Kamal bags National award for this film.

Hey,

I just saw the movie (in bits and pieces cos I thought it was rather dragging and hence fast forwarded many seconds) and came across your blog while I was wondering what other people were wondering about this movie.

Anyways...Great Analysis!! You must have a scientific mind.

Ever heard of being precise and concise? Well the movie is very precise but not very concise...so much for being a scientifically thought movie eh? And you could quote the same for my rant as well.

Cheerio!!

You can expect only that much graphics. We are not Hollywood to spend crores on graphics.

fletcher was cornered, that is why he broke it. he didn't mean to swallow it. he wanted to spread it and start a bio war. we are not god to create exact human face. still make up was good. how can fletcher destroy it? it is clear that tsunami destroyed because they already mentioned that, large amount of NaCl(salt) can destroy it. Sea water has salt in it. //if one cant identify kamal in the make up anyone could have played that character// this is bull shit.

That part about Napolean and santhana bharathi can be prooved. They will be given credits at the same time in the beginning.
